Wi-Fi Panel Q&A: How To Protect Your Network From IoT Cyberattacks
We recently held a Facebook Live event in which a panel of Wi-Fi experts from Aerohive – Abby Strong, Mat Edwards and Milind Pansare – sat down together and answered questions in real-time about how to secure the Internet of Things, and protect networks from an attack similar the recent IoT cyberattack. We did this live event becuase we have some solid strategic advice to share. The major security attack on Dyn caused massive website outages for Twitter, Spotify, Reddit and others. Experts believe that this attack can be attributed to, at least in part, a bot that scours the web for IoT devices like video cameras that were protected by factory-default usernames and passwords. The bot then uses that devic to attack online targets. It’s been speculated that this attack worked so well because people were using default admin credentials and outdated firmware. Most of the conversation around the attack has focused on the fact that the world was asleep at the wheel and got caught off-guard by an insidious threat. And we should have seen it coming.
We at Aerohive see things differently – we did see it coming, and have already solved the problem. As our panelists explains, tools for preventing an IoT cyberattack like Dyn’s have been readily available all along: SD-LAN and network management provide all the tools needed to shut out malicious devices from your network, and thwart future IoT security breaches.
