I Just Want To Do One Thing But Don’t Know How…
… And don’t want to spend the time to learn how.
I get you. While I do enjoy learning new stuff, sometimes we just want something to work. And we don’t want to spend time learning it. Truth to be told, it’s not sometimes, it’s most of the time. Look at smartphones. If it’s not easy to use, I will not use it.
So how does this apply to Aerohive’s Network Management System, HiveManager NG? At Aerohive, we like to think that we are very successful in creating powerful yet simple to use solutions. And we do, but like everything else, simple is a subject of perspective. Something very simple for even an average technology user can be daunting for others.
I’m sure everyone has a story about how they supported their moms, dads or grandparents with computer issues. And we do understand that some users that are challenged in configuring Aerohive solutions are not comfortable in the networking configuration and network management. Or maybe they are but they’ve never configured a feature “x, y and z”. Or it’s been a while that…
Whatever the reason for it, we do understand the issue. That is why one of my favorite features of the HiveManager NG is a feature called “Guide Me.”
Where is it, you say? We’ll just log in to your HiveManager account and look on the right hand side of the screen. I call it “The awesome button”.
Now click it! What you get presented with is the Guided Configuration menu. Here you can search for or browse the available guided configuration scenarios. At the time of writing this blog we have about a dozen of the flows.
Now click one. It’s just beautiful, isn’t it?
It is hard to convey how great this feature is by just reading about it in the blog. So I hope my story illustrates the point.
I was attending an internal partner conference. It was a completely new partner, with a mix of network engineers and sales personnel. I was showing them the overall benefits of our solution. And as I like to challenge people and to showcase Guide me feature, I asked attendees the following questions:
- Who has any Aerohive experience? – I don’t need you.
- Who has any experience configuring WLAN solutions? – I don’t need you.
- Who has ever configured any Enterprise network solution? – I don’t need you.
- Who has ever configuring any Network device, including your home Wi-Fi router? – I don’t need you too.
I ended up with two people in the room that had no previous experience in configuring any network devices. And one of them volunteered to be my “test” subject.
So I picked up a brand new AP and said: “See the screen? You are looking at HiveManager NG”. Please provision this AP to my HiveManager instance. To illustrate the person’s confusion this will suffice:
So I offered my help. And the only help I offered was “click the awesome button.” Couple of minutes later we had the AP nicely provisioned on the HiveManager. So then I wanted a guest network…. And another couple of minutes later I got my wish…
Try it out. Let me know what you think. Also let me know what additional guides you would like to see. Spoiler, we already have about 50 of them in our backlog.
Until next time, Gregor
